We are here to make printing simple, answers to our most common questions below:
How much will it cost?
Every print job is unique, so we provide custom quotes based on your specific requirements.
Variables like paper type, finish, and print method can significantly affect pricing.
What information do you need to provide a quote?
To accurately quote your job, we need to know:
- Final size
- Number of printed pages (pp)
- Colour requirements (full colour, black only, or spot/Pantone colours)
- Quantity
- Any specific finishes or binding requirements
I have got my quote what do the below terms mean?
Plus cover: is where your cover is printed on a different stock to your text pages – often it is thicker.
Self cover: is where the cover and the text stock are the same.
PP: printed pages – that is what we use for your page count.
Cover: in a publication the cover allows for 4 pp – front cover, inside front cover, back cover, inside back cover.
Satin or Gloss Aqueous: This is a coating that we put over all offset printed work so that we can work with the printed project straight away rather than waiting for ink to dry.
An example: 12pp + cover: A publication consisting of 12 pages of text plus a 4-page cover printed on heavier stock, for a total of 16 pages.
What sizes can you print?
We print standard sizes like A2, A3, A4, A5, DL, etc., but can also accommodate custom sizes.
On our large format we can print 110cm wide by as long as you need as we print on rolls.
We also have access to the wider BlueStar sites which offer larger sizes.
How many copies can I print?
We can print as few as one copy! However, your unit cost decreases with higher quantities.
We offer both digital and offset printing to accommodate small and large runs efficiently.
So yes you can come to us for 100 business cards or 100,000 brochures.
What types of binding do you offer?
- Saddle stitching
- Square binding
- Wiro binding
- PUR binding
- Case binding
- Sewn binding
- Stitched binding
Please note that when your publication is saddle or square stitched your page count needs to be in multiples of 4.
e.g. 16pp, 48pp.
What type of files do you accept for printing?
Our preferred format is PDF, but we can accept a wide variety of file type.
If you’re unsure, just ask.
What types of printing do you offer on-site?
Digital Printing, Large Format and Offset Printing and in our Auckland and Wellington sites we also have Indigo printing presses.
How long will it take?
Each job is unique but a simple digital job once the proof is signed off, can take as little as 4 days.
Large format jobs can generally be turned around in 24 – 48 hours.
Book publication generally takes about 10-15 working days from sign off.
Please ask your account manager for more accurate timings based on your specific job as it also depends on how much work is prebooked.
What software do you use for design and prepress?
Our design and prepress team work primarily with Adobe Creative Suite, with Adobe InDesign program being our main layout tool.
Can I use Canva to design my print?
Yes, you can. However, Canva files often lack bleed, correct size and colour settings.
We can usually correct this, but any adjustments will be charged accordingly.
Before starting, we recommend researching how to set bleed, colour mode and export settings in Canva.
Can you design a project for me?
Absolutely! You can meet with one of our account managers to discuss your ideas and we can call in a member of our design team if required.
We do charge for design and we can give you our best estimate on costs at the time of meeting or receiving files.
How should I set up my file for print?
Please follow these print-ready specs:
- CMYK colour mode
- 300dpi resolution
- 3mm bleed on all edges
- Supplied at final size
- Booklets / books supply as single pages – not spreads.
- Exported as a high-quality PDF
